There used to be only one way of working, which involved following a conventional path and operating within a very rigid corporate structure that was considered to be the only way of doing business, but all that has changed since the digital revolution.
Thanks to the likes of coworking software, and other tools that are readily available to make it possible to work anywhere and on your own terms, digital nomads are free to unleash their entrepreneurial spirit without the previous corporate constraints that are no longer so relevant.
What is it about this way of working that corporations could learn from?
A new set of rules
A fundamental feature of being a digital nomad and being able to work remotely anywhere in the world is that you tend to be able to set your own terms when it comes to how and when you work.
The corporate mindset of everyone coming to an office and working 9-5 is a bit too rigid for the modern world, in many respects, and corporations could find it easier to attract and retain the right people if they offered a similar level of flexibility.
Feeding off the energy of others
When you free people from the usual constraints of a corporate structure it tends to encourage a more entrepreneurial and creative mindset.
Even when you are classed as a digital nomad it definitely doesn’t mean you are working alone.
Coworkers have built up a strong community where people are encouraged to network and share ideas with each other and find solutions through this connectivity.
If corporations could find a way to replicate this sense of community within their own business it could help encourage a greater level of collaboration.
Lifestyle
You can find plenty of examples of digital nomads combining work with leisure in a more seamless way than the traditional corporate way of doing things.
Not everyone can check in to work for a few hours, go surfing, and then come back to their laptop later on in the day, but the idea of giving people more opportunities to explore their passions alongside work could offer benefits to corporations.
Offering flexible working tends to breed a certain level of loyalty and if the work gets done within an agreed timeframe, does it really have to be done on a 9-5 basis?
Personal development
Life experiences and travel often encourages personal growth and development levels, so it stands to reason that someone who manages to combine travel with work is likely to enjoy a more rounded view of work and life, in general.
If you are consistently working in the same environment your thought process is likely to become stifled and predictable. However, if you enjoy lots of personal development opportunities in the form of travel and new experiences it could unlock new career options.
Corporations that encourage their workers to pursue personal development goals are often rewarded with employees who offer valuable input and are committed too.
Being a digital nomad offers definite perks and has some advantages that a number of corporations would do well to try and replicate if they want to see their workforce reach their true potential.
