You don’t need to worry about that problem anymore. I am here for you. I’ll show you step by step on how to install fonts in Photoshop. The best part is that you don’t need to be a coder or hacker to do this. Fonts can be installed within seconds just by making a few clicks.
I am going to explain to you how to install fonts in Photoshop by downloading a font from a website, installing it, and later using it n Photoshop.
Let’s start.
Step 1: Download the font
To install the font in Photoshop, you first need to install the font in macOS and Windows. This is because Photoshop does not have its own repository of fonts. It fetches the fonts which are already installed in your OS.
Let me show you how to install a font in your OS. But before that, the first step is to download the font.
You need to remember that not all fonts are downloadable. It depends on the website whether they want to allow the users like us to download the fonts or not. Some sites don’t allow the fonts to be downloaded, some allow but ask you to pay the money, and some are free. I am going to use the free one.
Luckily, I found that one of my favorite fonts is downloadable. The font name is Montserrat. I found it on Font Squirrel.
The next step is to download the font. You will see “Download OTF” which means that you’ll download the font. OTF is nothing but the extension of fonts just like we have JPG for images.
Step 2: Locate the font
Open the folder in which the font is downloaded. If you don’t remember where have you downloaded the font then you can open the Downloads windows in Chrome. The shortcut is Cmd/Ctrl + J.
You’ll notice that there would be either one version or multiple versions. In my case, I have got multiple versions. It’s basically the whole package. I have all of the versions of Montserrat. Be it Regular, Bold, Italic, Light, or even Extra Bold, I have all of them.
The best part is that all have .otf extension, which is an extension of the fonts that is supported by macOS and Windows.
Step 3: Install the font
Double click on the font you want to install. It will open the font installation wizard.
Click on the Install Font to install the font.
And, voila! macOS will automatically open the installed fonts. I can also see Montserrat there.
macOS installs one font at a time. This is why, only the Light version is installed. If I need to install the Bold version, I need to double click on the Bold font and install that also.
If you need to install multiple fonts, repeat this step with all the .otf files.
I just installed the Regular version also. Now, I can also see the Regular version here.
Step 4: Open Photoshop and Use the Font
Time to check whether I can use that font in Photoshop or not. I think that I can use Montserrat in Photoshop now.
Save your work and close Photoshop if it’s opened. Open Photoshop again and grab any Type tool. I have grabbed Horizontal Type Tool from the Tool panel in the left. You can also do it by pressing Shift + T.
In the option panel, find the font that you just installed. Here’s my Montserrat font in my Photoshop. Yay!!!
Time to type something.
Let’s show some love for Montserrat. I am typing Montserrat. In the option panel, I have two versions of Montserrat available. One is light and the other is regular. This is because I installed only two versions until now. If I had installed other versions also, they all would appear here.
This is all, buddy. It also works in the same way for Windows. Just the user interface would be different but steps are the same. You first need to download and install the font in Windows. Later, save your work and close Photoshop if it’s opened. Open it again and activate the Horizontal Type Tool. You’ll see your newly downloaded font there.
